Madrid Design Festival: The definitive guide
by Laura S.
We are approaching one of the most important dates in the world of design.
Of course, we are referring to Madrid Design Festival, an international festival created by La Fábrica that puts the Spanish capital in the spotlight and places it in a strategic place for the entire international design sector.
The second edition of this memorable festival will take place throughout the month of February. More than 200 activities covering all disciplines of design, with more than 410 professionals from the sector.
From architecture to interior design, through graphic design or communication and of course without losing the innovative air that characterizes it so much.
The Faberin team will be there demonstrating that design is like good wine… and we improve with time!
Matadero Madrid is the place everyone is talking about this month. A large part of the city’s design-related cultural activities will take place here. Exhibitions, formations and many other cultural spaces will be the protagonists and the focus of attention for all design lovers.
The main objective of this celebration is to show the best design proposals as a strategic reference instrument to promote, project and disseminate design culture.
Fresh Product is a project by DIMAD that aims to publicize the best of product design made in the last year by designers in Madrid. An innovative idea that bets on originality within the national design, something that Faberin will support our participation through the design lamp Bankrobber.
This improvement of the classic design of the banker’s lamp or Emelralite is brought to us by its Madrid designer Pablo Carballal , who has reviewed and customized it with brass to become one of the most groundbreaking and innovative designs of the moment. .
The originality of its name is due to the song Bankrobber by The Clash, as it is a tribute to those who want to illuminate their booty after a well done blow.
Are you a lover of unique and exclusive design? Surprise yourself every week with the latest from Faberin!
In addition to the show serving this February in the design capital, the Madrid Design Festival also offers COAM members the possibility of attending the Madrid Design Pro. This is a professional program that brings together the most significant figures of national and international design with a clear objective: design the world from a new perspective.
CENTRO CULTURAL DE LA VILLA FERNÁN GÓMEZ
In Fernán Gómez’s exhibition space, three artistic samples created to surprise will be presented.
Backstage: From the imaginary to the real
A retrospective exhibition of the work of Jaime Hayón, one of the most outstanding designers of his generation. This exhibition is a faithful reflection of his intense and creative work that has undoubtedly improved over time.
The appliances of our life: A history of design
The historical evolution of the figure of the household appliance since the beginning of the 20th century has been brutal, and this exhibition reviews its evolution through the most significant pieces within its functions.
A chronological tour that presents Alfaro Hofmann , and that without a doubt is being one of the most awaited collections of the moment.
Vinilygráfica: Masters of musical graphic design
There is no life without art just as there is no design without music. This key cultural sector could not be missing from this comprehensive exhibition.
Within this collection we can find the most iconic talent of great designers such as Peter Blake, Javier Aramburu or Paula Scher among many others. A journey from the twentieth century that leaves no one indifferent.
Madrid as design capital: Museums and other facilities
As we have already seen, February has filled Madrid with the design.
The variety of activities and appointments offered by this Madrid Design Festival to “redesign the world” is brutal.
Some of the museums that have joined in this initiative to claim the value of design as something that transforms society are the following:
The National Archaeological Museum
Through a thematic tour with design as the protagonist, it will be presented “Designs for the future: the first objects designed by the human being”, where we will travel through time and anthropological history to discover how design is something that was present in the capacity of the human being in an inherent way.
The Cerralbo Museum
There is a clear commitment to the integration of a series of new furniture, artefacts and objects in the rooms of the Museum. This commitment invites us to revisit the historical collection of a 19th century aristocrat in dialogue with the contemporary and radical language of Guillermo Santomá..
The Costume Museum
There will be twenty costumes and more than thirty objects the ones that will compose “The power of the image”, by Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. This exhibition will reward and recognize the trajectory of the designer, highlighting her work and her great capacity for innovation.
National Museum of Decorative Arts
Group 13 was created in 1961 by a group of young graphic designers who began to act in an unconventional way with the intention of transgressing the advertising language. Thanks to this initiative we can observe a current vision of this group to understand, from a more current perspective, the essential contribution they have made to the advertising sector, also to the design of communication and of course to artistic creativity as such.
National Romanticism Museum
Thanks to a commitment to the design of jewelry in Romanticism, visitors will be able to take an autonomous tour through a selection of pieces exhibited throughout the museum.

On the other hand, we will also be able to count on a great variety of conferences, talks and workshops that will flood the framework of this festival. Among all these, the Patio de la Casa Encendida stands out, which will host the cycle La revolución del hogar y la ciudad, with the collaboration of IKEA.
The hotel Only You Atocha, will also offer a special space, in this case the Espacio Food Design. It will thus present a proposal for dinners during all weekends where design will be the main protagonist in gastronomy.
Finally, it will be the Festival OFF that will give voice to the main designers of Madrid to be able to propose samples, installations, talks or routes around themes such as architecture, furniture, lighting or current ceramics.
In addition, numerous installations will take to the streets of Madrid, taking the design to every corner.diseño a todos los rincones.
